Second WIP - A Hand

I gave up on my first attempt of making my boxer dog Kimmy (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=29221) I wanted to use fur and rig her for animation but it was abit ambitious while just starting out with Z-Brush

So after going through the practical manual abit i decided to try and make a hand model like Francois Rimasson.

This is what i’ve come up with so far, I’m just starting to get to grips with the projection master and enjoying it loads

Mental Ray render using miss_fast_simple_maya

I’m going to go back and sort the finger nails out and then start painting some colour maps etc. There’s a very quick rig test in the zip file, wasn’t sure how to upload avi’s etc so it might not have worked, its a divx.

Well, back to work, absolutely loving Z-Brush, although i think i’ve uncovered its dark secret, it hides the windows clock. I’m loosing hours and hours to it

i love this pretty nice hand!

hey! this is well done!
is the palm a bit small though (or is it a chimp’s hand?)

thanks for sharing

yeah zbrush is an evil time sucker.

great hand for a second post!!

only thing that looks kinda funky is the thumb, seems posed a bit unnaturally.

look forward to more.

Thanks for the comments, yeah i had loads of issues with the thumb. I went back into maya this morning and fixed it best i could but i messed up the exporting from z-brush to start with. So i was all happy i’d got it looking better, took it back in to zbrush and the model went crazy when i upped the sub-div’s. Figured it out now but lost all the maya work i’d done :frowning:

Just about to have another go now, then need to re-detail some bits in zbrush and attack the colour maps.

Its all a learning process tho

I wasn’t meant to be working the first half of this week but it seems i am now so not sure how much i’m going to get done in my spare time. Will update when i can

Hey!

this is a hand i have done (very low poly for now) in silo :
http://www.silo3d.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4661

I think you can edit the overall thumb shape inside zbrush going at level 0 and using the move tool…
Or export obj at level 0, just move vertice in another software (don’t add any) and reimport in zbrush - but i really prefer zbrush for this kind of tweaking

Keep us updated!

Very small update, tried fixing a few of the problems with the thumb, Still need to sort some detail out on the fingers but think i’m pretty much done with modelling.

Throught i’d have a quick go at a colour map, with a few false starts using zbrush to paint them, i installed ZappLink to see what all the fuss is about, and i’m blown away by how impressive the ability to switch to Photoshop is. Only a very very quick map, just darkened a few wrinkles and highlighted some areas.

Going to fix the few wrinkles i’ve got problems with and do a proper colour map, free time is at abit of a premium at the minute its mainly just an hour here and there in the evenings :frowning:

EDIT: Not the best angle of the render, fingers look abit bent but they are actually straight i promise

Well i’ve finally got round to doing abit more work on the hand. I think i’m going to call it done now and move onto another small project, all in all a great learning experience for Zbrush, and for using Zbrush with maya.

Apart from some problems with the actual base model i’m fairly happy with how it turned out (thumb and wrist gave me loads of problems rigging, i modeled them at funny angles to begin with and this caused lots of problems down the line)

The colour map i made isn’t really showing through in the renders and looks alot more pink than i wanted and details like blue viens aren’t showing, not sure if i’ve got it on the right channel of the miss_fast_simple_maya shader. Someone else posted an old man picture using the miss_fast_skin_maya shader and seemed to have alot more control over the colour so going to investiage that.

I’ve uploaded a quick animation, was mainly just to check how the displacements worked in motion, plus i think something always looks better if tis moving. the catching the ball plays way to slow as i aniamted it with Play Every Frame on so the feedback in the veiwport was completely off.

Think my next project is going to be a dwarf miner, been reading some Terry Prachett and have images of stocky dwarfs with pick-axe’s and candles on their hats. Might give it a go, going to find some ref pics and do some drawings.

Cheers
