Sculting and keep dimensions

So i have a question…

i have a 3d made box with certain dimensions, now i want to sculpt some stuff on the lid and exterior and still keep the dimensions.

how am i going to go about this? should i make a shell and sculpt on that and then later add that to the box? if i put the box in zbrush dimensions will be lost once i make it a dynamesh…

thanks in advance…

I’m not very experienced yet but would back face masking help keep close enough tolerances ? In other words, wouldn’t the inside of box stay the same dimensions if you only sculpt on outside with auto masking the back on?

your question not clear dear
plz re-ask to help you

thanks

I have asked this myself also. Maybe an explanation (how I understand it):
I design a box in a 3D mechanical design software (I use Alibre design). Let’s say it’s 100x100x100 mm on the outside. Now I want to put some ornaments on the outside of the box so it doesn’t look so boring. So I export the box as STL and load it into ZBrush. The aim is to export the file after editing in ZBrush in a way that keeps the 100 mm dimensions of the original design.
There is an askzbrush

#AskZBrush - “How can I export out multiple subtools to STL and maintain the scale?”

that might help there. The question is not exactly what you are asking, but the scale options are probably what we need.

Addition: All you need to do is press “update size ratios” in zplugin-3d print hub-set export size.
The model itself is always scaled to size 2 (which is something zbrush seems to prefer), but the 3D print hub keeps the scale for exporting later. I just tried this: Made a box in Alibre, STL export, STL import in ZBrush, Update size ratios, some sculpting (ZRemesh, Subdivision, Decimation afterwards) and then STL export. Scale was accurate when importing in 3D print software.
