"Sculptris" mode resolution issue

I’m trying to use Sculptris mode like its… well… Sculptris, and its doing some weird stuff.
ZBrush’s dynamic tessellation is nothing like Sculptris and I dont know why and cant fix it.I have tried various things and just made it worse (and not in a way related to the problem, dynamic brush size made itr feel even worse for example).
I dont understand whats wrong here, SculptGL, Blender and even that thing meshmixer or whatever it was called tessellate in an intuitive way and yet I find ZBrush’s version to be seriously weird. To the point where I am still using Sculptris because it works better. I honestly find Dynamesh more like Sculptris than this new Sculptris mode.
So, is there a button someplace that I dont know about?

Here’s an example:

  1. Zoom in on an object.
  2. Draw stuff.
  3. Zoom back out.
  4. Smooth part of what you drew.
  5. Look at the result.

The smoothing dropped the resolution and trashed what you drew and in almost any case made it less smooth. All of the brushes that do dynamic tessellation do this, and some of the most important brushes, like the Move brush dont actually do dynamic tessellation at all.
I hope that makes sense, its kind of confusing…

Cheers,
Mealea

Hi Mealea,

You have two slider controls in “Stroke > Sculptris Pro” that control tessellation of the stroke. Try adjusting those. Default settings for those sliders is SubDivide Size 1 and UnDivide Ratio 1.25.

Hya Zber!
Thanks, trying them now!

AHHA!
I think it was “Combined” I turned it off and it looks like it might be helping

Ok, that’s close, its not quite right but its far better.
The Combined button is almost like a tool itself… this is pretty wild.
The Sliders didn’t do it, but messing with them made ZBrush VERY SLOW… Especially with PolyFrame on, never do that. Yikes!

Thanks ZBer, it looks like Combined being off is close to what I was after!
This is much better!

No worries Mealea! :+1:

This is such an amazing improvement it should be the default.
Thank you again ZBer!

It stopped working… Im confused

Maybe your using a brush that doesn’t work with Sculptris Pro. Not all brushes will work with it. I don’t know if there is a list of compatible brushes or not. Maybe the ZBrush2018_what’s_new PDF in Documentation folder might have. Starts on page 20.

It’s working again, I dont know whats going on, Im using clay, clay buildup, clay tubes and standard. I’m also using smooth with and without SHIFT.
I used to use custom brushes but gave up since I cant make them permanent, all the MAH brushes died and the brush menu is full of stuff I cant get rid of and dont want. These are all right at the top so I can get at them easily and I think they are all compatible.

Nevermind, I dont know whats happening

Sculptris mode doesn’t work with backface masking turned on or vdm brushrs.

It only work with more basic/standard brushes.

Maybe it is your case?

Im only using standard, clay tubes and clay buildup, and out of habit move, a rather important brush, that I noticed doesn’t work, but the main thing is the first three and smooth brushes. It’s especially difficult with smooth, smoothing should not destroy resolution, yet it does.

Yea - you need to know that brush size controls the resolution. So it’s wise to turn off Sculptris mode for smoothing or to make brush smaller.

It was an issue for ma at the begging too. But I forced myself to think about what I wan’t to achieve, I gave shortcut to sculptris mode and it became no1 tool for building up the forms.

Just control your brush size and on/off sculptris mode. Or modify it as you like in options and save preferences.

Ok, that is the only thing that works so far, turning it on and off. Thanks!

It actually works pretty well, but means I need the keyboard again and that’s a big part of why I use Sculptris.
Maybe if I move the \ key on to the wacom tablet if that’s possible…
hmmmm
