Sculpting weaved beard hair?

Hi there, just wondered if anyones got any tips for weaving platted beard hair? I’m working on a dwarven character and would really appreciate some advice on how to approach this, since I’m not sure if I’m doing it correctly

Here’s an example of the progress:

I think you have chosen a very complicated subject for your first experiment with hair. My recommendation is to find some good reference. Hair has been carved in sculpture for centuries. There are also some excellent zbrush examples. Back off the full beard for a while and try to get a bit of sculpting on a plane to read has hair. It’s hard. I have limited experience with hair, but I can recommend the clay tube brush for blocking in the shapes, hpolish, flatten, and dam standard for peaks and valleys. Good luck!

Thanks ioster, this is my first experience with sculpting hair and like you said its very hard! I’ll keep working at it, thanks for the advice

Another thing to consider, if you’re doiing braids like that, is to actually model the braids in a 3D app. Just 3 poly cylinders wrapped around each other, then import them into ZBrush, and sculpt/detail the individual strands. It’s loads easier and offers more control. That would also probably speed things up for you and make things a bit less redundant since you have so many braids going on.

Ah yeah, good point  I can imagine it’d definitely speed things up, sculpting those braids took ages :frowning: Its true a lot of that can be done in Maya rather than taking ages in Zbrush…thanks!
