Sculpting Stone (XSI-Zbrush-XSI)

Hi Zbrush people! This is my first post! I am sure excited to be here!
Just yesterday I have done my first sculpting, and it was not as exciting as some others’ are. I never learnt how to sculpt, just trying based on my intuition. Since I am a hobbyist, not a pro, I did not have much problem with that.

Now, I was trying to make this thing in XSI:

Comparing with the grid, you guys can have an idea of the scale of this thing. Now I wanted to sculpt some imperfections and other things on the base piece. So I took it to Zbrush with UVs, ran an UV check and it was all good. Then I sculpted all the necessary detail and it now looks like this:

I only sculpted this much because the rest will either be covered by something or be out of the range of the shot.

Problem 1:The kind of jagged look did not do too much harm in this case, because probably I would want it that way, but I noticed, in many videos, the slash brush and the rake brush practically cuts through like knife through butter. In my case, even at 8th level of subdivision, which is insane, I cannot get very smooth lines. Only if I sculpt along an edge loop ( as shown in XSI cap ) then only I get smooth line, otherwise it’s horribly horribly jagged.

Problem 2: When done sculpting, I am trying to export a displacement map out of Zbrush. Under the tools far right, under the dispacement section, when I try to create displacement map, Zbrush just does not respond. It’s like clicking on a button that has no function assigned.

DPSubPix 0
DPRes 2048
Adaptive unchecked
SmoothUV checked
Intensity 0
Mode 50

I tried clicking on the create normal map button too, but that is also equally unresponsive. I tried the Multidisplacement 2 plugin, which is exporting some TIF file, but that file has 0 bytes and has no info. Last but not least, when I click on ZMapper, unlike the videos I have seen in ZClassRoom, my geometry just turns green and keeps rotating in a sort of zero gravity environment.

I am totally puzzled. Please somebody help me!

  1. Try turning down the Z Intensity. This will reduce the impact of a stroke. Also, experiment with other brushes - it may be that what you need is a different alpha/smaller brush size to achieve the results you are after.
See here for more on the sculpting brushes:

  2. What subdivision level are you trying to generate your displacement map? You should be at level 1 (the lowest).

even with jagged edges you can always use the pinch to bring them closer together which does help somewhat, not sure how that will effect your disp map though.
