Sculpting inside mouth affects outside of mouth

This may have been answered before but I did a search and came up with nothing.

Doing a character sculpt, and when I sculpt, paint, or try to mask the inside of the mouth it comes through on the outside of the mouth, the cheeks. Same with when I try to do things on the outside, it shows up inside. If I try to mask off the outside of the mouth the mask starts to come through on the inside. Is there a way to prevent this?
