sculpting in tranparency

hi,

if I’m working with multiple subtools and I switch on transparency, I can see the intersections of those subtools but I can’t sculpt on any unless I can directly see that area of the selected tool ie. unobstructed by other tools

an easier way to explain may be - say I have a helmet and I want to fit a basic head inside it. I can draw out a sphere for the head, move it roughly into position, switch on transparency to see the ‘head’ in the helmet… But I can’t affect any part of that head to roughly fit it to the inside of the helmet. I can shape the face (assuming the helmet is open faced) but anything already inside the helmet is off limits. Kinda defeats the idea of transparency in the first place =\

I understand that with this example people might say you should fit the helmet to the head, not the other way around, but that’s not the point. There are many cases when this would be useful. And I’m sure I used to be able to do this ?

I’d start with the head and use masking and then extract to make the helmet. But I think I’ve noticed you can’t always edit when transparency is used and such as you have mentioned.

thanks doug,
yeah, i understand there’s a number of ways to go about these things (I’m not actually making a helmet, it just seemed an easy way to explain what I meant! =/) but as you’ve pointed out there are limitations, which I can’t see any reason for…?
In my case I just need to pull out a really basic neck and shoulder girdle (a bust I guess) to fit around the collar of a garment. It’s only there to cast or receive shadows, but it’s a pain to have to keep switching solo on and off to get a reasonable fit and make sure it’s not poking through…
