I have an idea for Zbrush (originally meant to be in clay) that involves 4 characters and a few props - weapons, set, and what not. How would I go about it? I’m thinking everything being a subtool. Or maybe on different layers. I’m not too sure I know how subtools and layers work though. Anyone have any good workflows for me to follow, I’m completely new to Zbrush and have not yet completed a sculpt using it. I was thinking: 1) design 2) base mesh for characters 3) set 4) sculpt 5) render (which I have never done)
Sounds like subtools is what you want, that’ll allow you to position each seperate tool in relation to the others and sculpt each of them. To do this you just need to start with your first tool, then go to the subtool section of the tool palette and click append and pick from the list of tools to add to it. If your importing a base mesh (as apposed to using a Zbrush primitive to start) then it’s best to already have imported it so that it shows up in the tool (and subtool append) menu. Then it’s just a matter of selecting the particular subtool and positioning with transpose then sculpting it.
Cool. Will I be able to go back and forth and still sculpt, make changes to and sculpt each subtool?
Absolutely, you can change between subtools at any time and sculpt.
I opened up zbrush and played around with it. I need practice, lol. I tried loading up an image plane with some reference too, tried putting it on a subtool and my sculpt (just a zsphere for practice) and I couldn’t get it to work. I would hit edit and everything from the work area would disappear and when it wouldn’t my zsphere would act really weird. I would try to just rotate it in place and it would travel on the work area. I need practice.
