Scaling problem with .obj (answered)

Hello, I would like to know if Zbrush is capable of exporting an .obj file and then re-import it at the same scale.

It looks like every time I import a previously exported .obj file the scale factor is completely different. I made sure that the Scale value (in the Export menu) is set to 1, but it doesn’t matter as it changes anyway to something else once I import the .obj file as a subtool.

So is there a way to fix that or is it a known bug? And if it is, is there a way to scale a subtool to a precise value in Zbrush, rather than just eyeballing it with the scale tool?

start with a box, or anything else made in Zbrush. That has a default scale of 1 and an offset of 0,0,0.
Anything you import into that tool will have these same settings. After you import a new mesh you can delete the box if you like. I keep it in most of the time…just cause I’m too lazy to delete it. It also reminds me that I did import the new mesh into the box geometry so my import and export settings will always be the same.

I’ve had to do this since 3.0 I believe and it hasn’t been “fixed” yet.

Yep, I found a similar answer. To import something at the same scale you exported it: First, append a starfish-like subtool (called Polymesh3d) and then import your .obj on top of the newly appended Polymesh3d subtool. The imported .obj file will appear at the right scale/position!

This… baffles me. But hey, it works (I just wish this “feature” were more carefully documented).

i don’t think they want to admit that there is a “bug” :stuck_out_tongue:
