As I create tools, I routinely save my progress as I go along.
I invoke the save command and choose Save Tool, as opposed to Save Document, and then I overwrite the existing file from the last save.
Is this the way everyone works?

yes this is correct, but instead of overwriting the file every time you should create iterations of the same file _001 _002 and so on. Like that you won’t loose your entire work in case the file gets corrupted
