salvaging sculpt from an initial plane sketch

I sometimes grab a 2d PM3D plane and start sculpting, often finding it’s a great way to explore form in a bas-relief fashion instead of starting out massing the entire thing in 3d.

The trouble is, that I like the bas-relief and want to salvage the sculpt–What’s the best way to cut-off the unused portions of the initial plane and build a proper 3d form from here? I want to save as much of the original detail as possible.

your comments are greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance,
