Rwar!! 7 day AsianLion_WIP. Seeking crits, advice/direction!!

So iam working on modeling an Asian Lion and I figured I should throw up what I have so far to see if there’s anything the ZBCcommunity can correct me on.
I finished my posed base mesh. and tonight I really wanna start sculpting the form and anatomy of the lion. But if anybody see’s anything thing to fix, then by all means, rip in, and let me have it.
Iam using a lot references(google, flickr. “lions, ect”) , a majority of which come from Ellenberger’s Animal Anatomy book. (great orthos, check it out).

As busy as Iam, (school) My goal is to work at least 6 hours on this everyday from today till next Thursday, and thus completing it. And of course, posting my progress every night. So iam really excited to see how this is going to unfold in the next week.

Any advice or crits, much appreciated!!

–grrr. Anybody know how to upload higher res images? I only know photobucket.

Don’t bother with hi-res images unless your finished, just a waste of bandwidth. Especially as non thus far have anything to do with Zbrush.

If your doing a detailed, realistic lion, then I’d say your current rigging is bending very funny. Should we assume your not using Zbrush 3.x, thus you decided to rig and pose in another app? Are you going to sculpt/paint the fur on? If your going to use a fur tool in your app, then it matters little for the bone structure or rigging as long as the resulting pose/animation looks correct (before any one explodes, read that again).

If your going to do a sculpt as many here have done of a lion, then just do it. 6 hrs a day for several days should yield some very impressive results no matter what you skill level. Post something every 2 hrs, then we’ll all have something to say…

I don’t have any images to compare this with for the specific animal in question, but head and body proportions look off. The position of limbs - all 4 - are wrong for a cat, much less one this size. They don’t fly, they cary all the weight with sheer confidence and are almost delicate as ballerinas. Cats, do not plod, they move through the world like fluid, even at a full run, or when suddenly confronted. They are explosive power that can be released at any moment. I don’t see that here.

I see one of those cheap plastic figurines you get at McDonald’s.

I’m hoping this is taken constructively. Animals are hard, in many cases far harder than people, as we don’t look at them properly. We don’t generally appreciate the confidence they project in everything they do.

Look forward to your sculpting…

“explosive power”

I like that!!!

Just for the hell of it i am throwing a random collage of my images so you have a better Idea of what were I am coming from. I created the base mesh in Maya, just so i had good topology and quads for zbrush.

I am trying to capture that cat in mid-air, like that pouncing pose, of the oh, no, tiger attack!! lol.
thank you sooo much for your reply Jason. no, really, I am just going to do it. heh. thanks a lot man!

Go for it. Pay attention to each of those images, where each of th 4 paws are in relation to each other.
