rotating teeth within the head

I pulled a head into Zbrush to morph the face. Great, no problem.

But now I need to rotate the top and bottom rows of teeth to match the new “yell” morph.

The head is the main object, which has separate groups within it: teeth, tongue, eyes, etc …

So I can CTRL SHIFT CLICK on the teeth which hides the other groups, but rotating the teeth, rotates the whole head.

So how do I just move the teeth without moving the head?

This has got to be page 1 newbie stuff, but I just can’t find it.

Thanks for your help.

Hide the parts you dont want to rotate, then adjust the teeth with Tool/Deformation/Rotate, with only the required axis checked. Hidden parts wont have moved.

NB: just clicking on the canvas and dragging doesnt rotate the model, but only changes the cameras orientation. That tricked me, first time!

Cheers,

R

Hi Rory,

I’ve got that clicking and dragging just moves the camera, and I’ve tried using the DEFORMATION menu, but those don’t seem very friendly to me. I was hoping there was a ghizmo that would do this while in “edit” mode.

Thank you for the quick reply.

Okies … Rory_L has the right approach, but hasn’t given you quite enough detail. Here’s a technique that’ll work (also good for eyes). It sounds a bit convoluted at first, but once you’ve done it a couple of times it’s quick and easy to control.

:white_small_square: Hide everything except the lower teeth and gums.
:large_orange_diamond: Hit Set Pivot Point [short cut P]. This changes the centre of gravity from that of the entire model, to just the CofG of the visible model parts.
:small_blue_diamond: Use the small preview window to drag the CofG cross-hair to the fulcrum of the lower jaw, so the lower teeth and gum will pivot around that point.
:red_circle: Mask the lower teeth and gum
:white_small_square: Make everything visible and invert masking.
:large_orange_diamond: Use the rotate control in Deformation (with just the X axis selected) and you’ll be able to move just the teeth and gum to the position you want.
:small_blue_diamond: Unmask all and return the CofG to its default (Clear Pivot Point . or Shift+P).

Good luck.

Hey Moochie!

“Pivot Point.” I had done it the way you described, masking and hiding and made it work, but pivit point would have made it a little easier.

Thank you guys for the help.
