Hey Stefan. I like making rocks so I thought I’d try and create a quick tutorial to show you my approach.
That said, every time I make a new rock I do it a little differently. Sometimes I lean on the Trim Dynamic brush, sometimes the Planar, sometimes Trim Smooth Border, and in the images below I used the MalletFast 2.
Try and go for a shape that is interesting and different from different viewpoints.
Try and be confident when defining the planes, the flat areas that create the edges.
Try and find a balance between being rough and being careful, you probably don’t want too much of either.
Dynamesh is your friend here. Take a look at Ryan Kingslien talking about using Clay Polish with Dynamesh.
He also has some nice tips in this rock tutorial.

Nice tutorial, thanks for putting it together; my rocks always turn out a little too round, so this is a great new way to look at doing things
