I like both, they have their strengths. Painter is awesome for digital painting (obviously) but image manipulation and color correction is a pain in the butt. That’s where Photoshop excels.
Check out Puddnhead’s Gnomon DVDs sometime. Awesome stuff.

This is a just for fun project I’m working on. My vision of Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Still working out the pose and the likeness. Yeah, the hands are bugging me too. This is about 50% there I think.
Or rather a bug modeled in ZBrush 4. ha. ha. I kill me.
Did this fer fun, still working on it. i need some models to play with in Modo so this one is intended for that. i made up the design sort of a fly/ant hybrid or something. this is rendered in ZBrush with passes and composited in Pshop. i created the Mat Cap based on a typical SEM style Maya shader.
anyways. its a bug.
Liking Spike, the hands look fine btw, at least the one where he’s swearing. Only thing that’s jumping out at me is the gore from the demon head doesn’t look like blood, it looks more like mud. It feels to sludge-like.
It’s supposed to be ice cream. ha.
Thanks for the crit. Yeah, I want to detail the gore a bit more. maybe stick some neck bones and some more obvious fleshy bits veins etc. Make the blood look more like fluid. kind of temp gore at the moment.
Spikes expression… I love it, the hand and fingers add alot to it too
Bug is nice too
“I kill me.” I love it!
these are test renders of my bug in Modo. i’m learning Modo and comparing it to mental ray in Maya. So far I like it (in some ways more than mental ray for Maya). the bug design itself is just the result of screwing around in Zbrush. i think i need to spend more time in the future actually planning out the design - an entomologist would have some real issues with this ant-fly-spider’s anatomy. But really I just wanted to make something quick that I could play with in Modo. GoZ for Modo works pretty well, just wish that there was a better way to automate the organization of the texture files created by GoZ.
well done mate!! really like the bug. the render is just crazy!! keep up the great work

Great work… I see you’ve picked the same route as I have… Modo and ZBrush… Modo 501 is great try it out… only GoZ must still be modified for it…
Enjoy…

Hi guys,
My book Introducing ZBrush 4 is FINALLY out!!!. I spent a year and a half writing it while participating in the ZBrush 3.5 and ZBrush 4.0 beta. I think its a HUGE improvement over the original edition. Paul Gaboury at Pixologic tech edited the book and ensured that all the information is accurate. I used my teaching experience at the Gnomon School of Visual Effects as a basis for the lessons in the book. Its designed to get you up and running with ZBrush fast and also to help bring you up to speed on new features. I focused on the digital sculpting aspects of the software. Topics covered include:
No doubt many of the regular users of this forum have been using ZBrush for a while but you might know some one who wants to learn quickly, I think this book is a great way to do that.
Here is a link to the book on Amazon.com. I would like to point out that Amazon has not updated the description of the book or the reviews. This is frustrating me and I’m working on getting them to update it. I listened to what readers had to say about the first edition and used their comments constructively to make improvements on the second edition. As far as the kindle users who want the DVD content you can easily request that directly from the publisher (www.sybex.com).
Thanks very much and if you have questions or comments you can post them to this thread or send me a message through ZBC mail.
Yes, I’m hoping to post some new stuff to my thread! sadly most of my current projects I am not able to share at the moment. Hopefully i’ll get a moment to update some of my personal work soon!!
Eric Keller
Congratulations!
Just ordered your book,…can’t wait to get it.
I’m old school and just learn things easier when I have a book sitting in front of me that explanes like an operating manual does…Been waiting for something like this for awhile now…Should make my life alot easier and less agrevating just having everthing in one place that’s easy to reach, and reach for… Thanks for putting this book together…much appreceated.
If theres anyone I can thank for helping me get anywhere close to achieving my goals in CG artwork its you, Mr.Gaboury and Scott Spencer. So thank you for the great books Mr. Keller.
congratulation man great job on the cover too
Looks great Eric! Books like this really DO make THE difference when you want to make progress and get great results fast - I know they do for me…
Hello Eric,
Unfortunatelly here in Europe we can have your book very fast, from 1 to 2 month to wait , and buying it in USA you have to wait for 3 weeks, without being sure that you will not have taxes to pay
.
Is there any other solution to have that bible fast ?
Robotnik
Thanks everyone, I think its a great book, very proud of it! I still have to get my copy of Scott’s new book and Ryan’s!
@Robotnik. I know that people who pre-ordered it from Amazon in the US have already received it. My brother got his copy before I got mine! No, Amazon does not know that he is my brother. As far as the Europe wait goes I have no idea how long it takes to get the book delivered in Europe. If you really want to get it fast you can order the Kindle edition but be aware that you’ll have to request the DVD from the publisher since there is no way to get the DVD to you with the Kindle edition. The DVD has the project files and some tutorial movies (yes, they have audio!).
I hope this helps.
I would like to say that although Gnomon was not directly involved in making the book the fact that I have been teaching the intro to ZBrush class there for the past two years helped me a lot in making the book better and several of my Gnomon students have artwork featured in the color insert. I wanted to feature the work of first time ZBrush students to make the point that ZBrush is really easy to learn once you get past the initial weirdness of the interface. Also I have been studying with Mark Dedecker who has been really chnaging the way I work with ZBrush. I owe a great debt to Scott Spencer, Ryan Kingslien, Meats Mier, and Alex Alvarez each of whom helped me to learn ZBrush over the years. I’m rambling now because I’ve had a lot of coffee…
Amazon.co.uk and bol.com both have it in stock, so you can order it there and have it delivered within days. I know I will, been looking forward to this book for months
Edit: just ordered it on bol.com. Will arrive in 7 days
I’ve received messages from friends in Europe who have the book already so there should be no delay in delivery.
