Rigging ?: What's the best way to...

I have a very particular goal in mind and am curious as to what the best possible workflow would be for this particular project.

The goal is to create a character which I can then position in many, many different poses (dozens or more).

Do I start with zSpheres, create a zSphere armature and sculpt zSpheres on top of my armature, then finish with clay on top of that model or
Do I start modeling with clay, create my model in a neutral position, then create a zSphere armature in order to position my model?

Is there any advantage/disadvantage to one method over the other.
