Rick Baker Monstermaker 3D Portrait - WIP

Thanks Kris, and don’t worry, we’ll survive for a while without you (only just  ) - your family are the number one priority, (followed by zbrush, then food, drink etc… )
Enjoy yourself, and on behalf of everyone on this forum,
Thanks for everything.

have a nice trip to Brazil and have a nice time with your family and friends…but please don`t forget us  …we will be waiting for you here

BIG THANKS FOR EVERYTHING!!

Cheers

Can you show your base mesh?

did you add specific edge loop for the beard and hair area before you started modeling?

When you work on portrait like this one or Picasso, do you collect a lot of picture, draw yourself from photography, do a plastiline version before you start or it’s just ‘on the fly’ in Zbrsuh?

Respect, portrait are hard stuff

My God! Your work is always inspiring…but this is just the ultimate level of coolness…and you totally rendered rick’s COOLNESS! way to go, yay! praying for a tut like the picasso one…tell us your secrets!

p.s. mr.monstermaker: sounds like a modern dorian gray syndrome to me :D:D

this is really neat model, i can say myself that is too reallystic. i don know i think realism is the main thing in 3d but i’m not sure. i only can say this guy is so similar to the main thing you try to model. really nice portaril of a great legend.

That’s such an inspirational story. Gives me hope. Thanks for sharing it.

inspiring story…keep up the good work

Bah! Awards are meaningless. But the body of work that they reflect is pretty amazing.

We try to limit our gushing to the work he actually posts here, out of respect for the artist – it’s not always easy living up to one’s image, and he shouldn’t have to here. We come here to relax and learn, after all. Let’s not deny Rick that same opportunity.

So, umm… Back on topic!

That’s a great likeness, Antropus. I’m a little saddened that we won’t be seeing updates for a while, but pleased to note the reason why. Long separations are meant to be ended, and reuniting trumps everything.

Ah sweet. So why the switch to Brazil? Some huge project? No more Cafe FX then eh? Tell us more! hehehe

By the way, Antropus, did you know that Krishnamurti literally translates to statue of god (the god Krishna)? - quite appropriate name for you then :D. (as in your sculpting skills, not your physique:lol: - sorry)

Hi guys!

I’m already in Brazil, enjoying my wife’s company
In fact, I found no time to do anything else apart of my work for CafeFX and having a great time with her. I hope I can get back to my personal projects soon and this piece is my priority!

Answering some questions:

Junk,

The basemesh is the same I used for these models:

did you add specific edge loop for the beard and hair area before you started modeling?
No. In fact, the beard and hair are just a rough representation to check if I’m in the path. For the final model, I’ll render him using Maya/MR with actual hair. So, my intention is to reduce these areas back to the head shape and re-model it with hair.

I always try to find good references but it’s never very easy. In this case, Rick himself sent me some great pictures because I told him about the lowres ones I found on internet. Rick is great!

Mr. Positive,
I’m still working for CafeFX, but remotely, sending the files via FTP.
At this moment I’m animating digital snakes for a fun movie

jit_gohil,
yeah! I knew about it only 3 years ago! My father was a huge admirer of Jidu Krishnamurti, the philosopher and decided to make his homage giving me the same name, which I like a lot

OH boy that movie is either going to hit on all cylinders or destroy hollywood hahahaha Of course I’m kidding…sort of…hehehe

Hi,

after two nights of fever (I got a pretty bad cold :frowning: ) I decided to go back to Rick’s portrait. This is the first render test done in Maya / MentalRay (all previous renders done in ZBrush). All the maps are temp. Hair and beard will be covered by geometry hair and maps. Eyes will receive bump map. Eyelashes and clothes will be also added. Right now there are no specular, subdermal or epidermal maps, only overall color and bump (a temp mix of the color map and the displacement map). With all the maps painted and in the right places I expect to improve it a lot. This is just a WIP

Maya Mental Ray render. Only color correction and DOF in Photoshop. There’s no paint over.

Quick Zbrush render. DOF in PS (hey Ofer, please, give us a descent perspective edit mode in ZBrush 2.5! )
