I am using zapplink to help create and unfold the map of a model what is happening is that when I go into texture and then create COL/Txr as it brings all the layers together from Photoshop and makes it as an unfolded layout of the model it confines the actual unfolded layout in the shape of a cross what I wanted was that the model created would be unfolded so that I could view the full unfolded model so that i could paint onto the unfolded layout of the created model and then reattatch it later in another software…
I cant understand why the unfolded image keeps turning out in the shape of a cross…
the outlay is there but inthe confines of a cross shape.
Can anyone help as I am having great difficulty

Many thanks in advance for any help…

Can you post some images of the problem you’re having?

Zapplink can’t be used to unwrap a model, only for texture creation. So I am at a loss as to what you’re trying to do inside of Zapplink.

hi thank you for your reply i have sent two images, image two shows whats happening when i create a texture useing zapplink, image one is the result i want to achive. the cross shape seems to appear even when i do a displace map etc…

i hope these images can explain the problem i am faceing any idears would be great.

Those shapes that you’re seeing are the result of the model’s UV mapping. UV mapping tells a 3D application which part of each 2D texture space wraps onto which part of the 3D model’s surface. It affects all textures/maps created for that model.

The type of mapping that you’re looking for (image on the left) is called a Box unwrap. It’s called this because the model is unwrapped as if it’s being projected onto the surface of an unfolded box. ZBrush will make use of this kind of mapping if it’s already applied to a model (just like it will make use of almost any other kind of mapping). But ZBrush can’t actually create that kind of UV layout. For that you’d need something like UVMapper.

Hi Aurick.
Thanks for getting back to me I am self teaching the use of Zbrush and using VTC Training DVD …
Perhaps if I explain exactly what Iam doing and achieving you will understand the problem that I am having…

  1. Once I have sculptured model I chose a Matcap material
2.I then go to Doccument Zapplink with this tool I create the front side etc…all views then ok in zapplink.
3 The images are then taken to Photoshop where adjustments to layers are made I then file save as under temp Zapplink export.psd.
  2. I then re enter ZBrush …hit accept in Zapplink projection Box.
  3. I then choose a material which is a flat colour and then make a texture using 2048 by 2048
6.I then go to texture ensuring RGB is on… I hit colour to texture button and it creates the colour map for me but at this stage the problem appeare as the image becomes a box map rather than a more convesntional map …that I can use to clour…

I would be greatful for any input as to how I can change my settings to achieve a non box map which would allow me to colour it

Each time i do this I get a box map which is causing me a problem…

I hope this info is helpfull so that you can understand my problem It might be that the settings are not set correctly anyway Hope to speak to you soon.
Kind Regards.

It’s because of the UV mapping that was assigned to the model before you even started work on it. EVERY texture or map that you create is going to use that UV mapping until you change it.

Here’s a tutorial from a while back that talks more about UV mapping: http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=8558

In ZBrush 3 you can also change a model’s UV mapping by importing a new version of the model into subdivision level 1 of your existing work. It is important that the point order not be different from what you began with; only the UV mapping itself should be different. If the point order changes, then the model will explode when you go back up to a higher subdivision level.
