Rhino 3d user needs a few pointers...

I’ve downloaded ZBrush (very cool little program), and now I’m trying to figure out how to use it with my rhino models. Maybe ZBrush isn’t the program to use, and Deep Paint 3D would be better for what I’m trying to do. I like the idea of painting directly onto 3D poly and nurb surfaces. ZBrush as it currently works doesn’t seem to import these kinds of objects to work with. Could be me,(most likely), any help would be great.

i dont think zbrush is a tuch up type program if thats what your talken bout i just think its used for modeling but im probably wrong…who knows

ola, David and welcome to ZBCentral!

i don’t know nothing about other 3d apps but i dug into the Central’s archives and came up with this thread re: a comparision ZBrush : DeepPaint.

the door to other 3d-applications opens via the polymeshtool (starshaped one) which allows you to import .obj and .dxf-files. you can access further information in the QuickLinks section (see button above of each page of this board) or better download the manual .pdf from pixologic.com and go to the "tools"chapter to find out some features of the polymeshtool (page 174 ff).

hope this helps!

Hi David,
The Rhino NURBS format works in one program only–Rhino. To bring rhino files into other programs they must be converted ito a polygon format. ZBrush supports Obj and Dfx. Use Tools :small_orange_diamond:StarPolyMesh :small_orange_diamond:Inventory :small_orange_diamond:Import to open your objects.

Be sure to post if you need more help!

Hi Dave,

The demo has certain restrictions and this may be one of them.

However, I use Rhino and bring exported meshes from one to the other.

(Rhino model rendered in Bryce)

1.In Rhino select the part of a model or the entire scene that you want to export.

  1. Use EXPORT SELECTED

  2. Select DXF as the file extension

  3. Under options use:

Writing surfaces as : Meshes
Writing Curves as: Polylines
Writing Meshes : Polyface meshes
(These are the settings I use and I think are pretty much default)

Now, when it gives you the option to reduce the amount of Polygons I suggest you do because as my old Dad would say:

Too many polys is nought but a foly…

ie. Too many and ZB crashes in my expreience)

  1. Go to ZBrush and follow the instructions from the guys in the other posts to import.

This image below is the same mesh as above but with material from ZB (and it was only a quicky), you can do a lot more than this.

ps. ZB is a lot cheaper

Hmmm cool program, Great forum, thanks for the tips guys that helps me a ton.
