retopology weirdness

Trying to retopology a piece but I am unable to see the vertex white boxes on the model, most of the time it draws the vertex boxes behind the model but never the ones that are in front of the camera.

any ideas on how to correct this issue would be greatly appreciated

UPDATE

all the white vertex points are appearing inside the model and not outside.
heres a screenshot of the issue.

I tried it on a different computer with newer nvidia drivers and still looks the same. any ideas on how to correct this problem ?
