Retopology limited to 15K Polys?

Hello,

I have a laser-scanned bone (femur) with 94K Polys.
I want to reduce it with Zbrushs retopology tool.

When choosing the bone in the Retopology Menu of the ZSphere, i get a message that there is a maximum of 15K Polys:

What does that mean?? I thought the retopolgy tool is meant to reduce large amaounts of polygons, but 15K seems VERY low as a maximum polycount? Who would reduce a 15K poly model?

Am I doing something wrong? I am on a Mac Pro with 8 GB RAM, can I tweak the 15K poly setting in Zbrush somehwere ?

There are two types of retopology:

  • In one, you create brand new topology over the source and then (if desired) project details across.
  • The other involves actually editing the existing topology, moving and replacing specific vertices. This latter technique is limited to 15K.

The two methods are very similar in their workflow. For the second method (which I’m guessing is what you’re doing) you simply use Tool>Topology>Select Topo and then immediately activate Edit Topology. For the first (which is what you want to do) you also need to use Tool>Rigging>Select Mesh and select your source mesh again before turning on Edit Topology.
