Retopology and Mac OSX crashes

Hi there,

trying the Mac 3.12-version for a couple of days (and being also really new in ZBrushing) I noticed, that retopology seems to be a useful feature. So far.

Question 1: Do I understand it the right way - retopology equalizes a mesh, what is in some parts deformed, so it is easier to work with the retopologized mesh?

This whole evening I tried to re-topologize a mesh I created some days ago after the thread of rastaman. (Nebenbei: Dankeschön, Ralf)

I tried EVERYTHING, but it is NOT possible, to retopologize a complete mesh in my Mac-system.

ZBrush crashes in EVERY effort I tried.

Question 2: Is this a bug in ZBrush for OSX and have I to wait for a bug-fix, or is there a trick somewhere?

(I use OSX 10.5.4, what seems really up-to-date, and there are 8GB of RAM available on a 3GHZ MacPro Eight-Core, what also seems not the smallest system)

Thanks for a hint,

my evenig now has passed by, good night

Stephan

Retopology allows you to do your creating without worrying about topology. Then you can create new topology near the end of your workflow, creating something that’s ideal for what you want to do with the mesh that you’ve created.

In other words: If you create your topology to begin with, you’re locked in by that topology. You can’t do anything that would violate the integrity of that topology, no matter how cool it might be. If you use retopology, you can be as creative as you want and then create the best topology for your model at the end of the process.

As for why you’re getting crashes, what are the steps that you’re following? What are your settings in Preferences>Mem? Is there a specific point that the crash always happens?

…my reply to this answer?

Hi Aurick,

I´m sure, I wrote a reply, but it did not appear here. So I can wait a long time for any response…

What I wanted to say: my Mac-ZBrush crashes EVERY time, I try to retopologize a model. It´s equal, if I take a hi-res or a low-res, it´s also equal, which kind of MEM settings I take.

It starts well, but it is not possible, to rework a whole model. Always crash.

Any idea, what I could do?

Thanks a lot for always being reliable,

Stephan

Hi there,

because I´m a really tough guy, what new software concernes, I don´t want to give up with the retopology-theme.

I just wondered, why in all tutorials they get a lower resoluted mesh than the basic mesh, and no (I hope) I discovered, why:

Retopologizing is a MANUAL process! That means, you have to set your mesh-points BY HAND! (Is that right?)

I always brushed over my basic mesh, obtaining a sub-divided one (and then the ZBrush crashes >:-(

This is a fact, that I could not find anywhere - maybe it seems so obvious, that no one thinks about it.

Can anybody give me a confirmation about this?

Thanks,

Stephan

You’re right. You set the points that create the topology that you want. One click per point. It’s actually pretty fast and easy when you get the hang of it.

…can be very hard, if it´s only possible via e-mail and, in my case, in a strange language, too… Puh!

Hi Aurick,

what I want to say: it´s very professional, how you manage your job as »super-moderator«. And you are very patient, not only with me. Fine.

Greetings,

Stephan
