retopologizing... What is "industry standard"?

Hi everyone,

I’m wondering what the consensus is on the “best and most commonly used” retopologizing method in the gaming industry right now. Are you retopologizing in zbrush or using an external program like Topogun or something else?

Thanks for any help and feedback with this.

I’m not in the gaming industry, but for what its worth, I use a plugin for Maya called Nex. Nex is my ultimate secret weapon. I could not work without it. I love it in an almost Biblical sense!!!

Will

3d Coat have good retopology/auto retopology features.

A lot of people where I am use NEX too. Very hard to retopo without it once you get used to it ;).

Hi! I use topogun mainly for retopologizing of single dense meshes (like creature’s/human’s body parts, human head etc). For more complicated meshes (like jackets-vest-body, with many penetrating parts) I prefer polyboost features.

Thanks for the tip about NEX. I hadn’t heard of that and 10 minutes of using it I can’t believe I never had it before now! Wow!

Yes, Nex is great for Maya users. Max users can use the built in Freeform tools which IMHO are some of the best. Topogun will give you the ability to reProject (preview) your hiRes mesh as you work (similar to ZB). Your last option is what I consider the leader of the pack, 3d Coat. Not only is the auto reTopo a great start it also gives you the most tools (different methods) for creating new geo.
