retopo workflow in zbrush4r4

I wonder if there is a documentation which covers the retopo workflow using zspheres in zbrush 4r4?

the online docs are quite a mess - from zbrush 2.0 to zbrush 4.4 all mixed together…

i am also looking for the transparency settings for retopo - they used to be under the draw menu, where have they gone? how to edit/activate backface culling for retopo with zspheres?

thanks for your help!

hi,

thanks for your reply

so that´s a 50 pages thread crossing from zbrush 3 to 4.0, not much better than the documentation; but very interesting anyway!

unfortunately it doesn´t tell where the transparency settings have been moved to…

but I have solved the problem by switching to topogun  was about time!

during my current project I have been using qremesher and dynamesh extensively; brilliant, brilliant tools, amazing! but when it comes to creating a lowres retopo for games assets zbrush still lacks usabilty.

Are you by any chance referring to Front Opacity and Back Opacity sliders in Preferences > Draw submenu?

ahhhrg… it was under preferences > draw, not under the main draw menu…

thanks for your help, zber!

You should use the new topology brush in Z4r4. Much more user friendly and way better than the old method of retopo. There is an excellent video covering its use in the zClassroom.

i thought the retopo brush is quads only? i need to make a lot of triangles

It can definately make triangles. I’m not sure that it’s useful for retopologising though. Seems to be more for creating topology for clothes, parts etc. would live to see Simone tackling a full retopologising with it though.

I have. It’s wonderful. That’s why I recommend it. Plus, you can export the model tessellated. Tool’s Menu>Export Sub-Palette>Tri

ok, thanks for the info! i will give it a try as soon as i have finished the current project, will post feedback then

cheers m

Don’t know what kind of thing you’ve done, but would love to see a movie of you doing for example a face. Any chance of that?

Well, I could but to be completely honest, now that I have learned, and used qRemesher…I don’t think I will ever hand retopo anything again…lol. I now use the topo brush for accessories.
Plus, the zClassroom has exceptional videos on the new qRemesher and guided curves as well as retopo only specific parts as well as whole models (they use a face).
You can see those videos here. Hope that helps. I highly recommend (if you haven’t done so already) spending a day or two with Z open and going through the videos. I am doing that now and I tell you I am beating myself up for not dong it sooner.

Yeh I’ve watched the videos, and tried out Qremesher including the guides video. Great for reducing the polys. Not great for the kind of topo control I might want to create topology on a face for facial animation. Do ou mean there’s a video that shows using the topology brush on a full face? Can’t see that one.

No I don’t mean such… sigh

See, this is where I fail to help. I have wanted to do dynamic CG prop and character animation of a high level for many many many years now yet never have. Even something as widespread as IK is still beyond me. I am so very sorry but I currently lack sufficient knowledge to help you with loop placement within a face for proper animation. I barely understand body topology for animation of a character so there are no breaking, tearing, stretching. See, I figured that I should probably master texturing, lighting, rendering, understanding dynamics, particles, and even various other important nuances before I tackle putting these elements to motion. Seems like, after 10 years, I’ve gotten lost in the process. Thank you though. I will now, not only devote myself to Z as I have recently done, but it seems I should start again with my character animation. C4D has been my home but if you recommend something else, I’m game. Back in 2004, I lost two very important job opportunities with Liquid Development & Digital Extremes because I was a C4D junkie and didn’t know a single thing about 3D Studio Max… double sigh Very sad times.

Thanks for helping, listening and informing me of what started my CG journey in the first place. Animation.

Cheers, Mr. Robb! You came here for help and it seems you have also helped me.

Not sure what I did to help, but you’re welcome.

I don’t have a problem knowing where to place the loops, I have a problem getting Qremesher to place them exactly where I want them :). That’s why I was thinking manual would be best. I’ll try again though.

If your interested, this is a good resource to learn Topology workflow.

Some great references there. Sme I’ve used myself. Don’t see how tomgetbthat kind of accuracy with anything other than manual retop. Will definately give the retology brush another chance, I just wondered if anyone had used it for full manual retop of this kind.
