Retopo Question from an Idiot

Say I have a tool I made some time ago, but it’s got a high poly count and no subdivisions 'cause I was an idiot at the time and deleted those subdivisions 'cause I wanted to merge stuff. Now, I want to retopo it, 'cause I finally understand that pesky little technique. Can I use Dynamesh or Decimate to create a low poly count version (save it under a new name) to reproject on?

I don’t think Dynamesh or Decimation is what you want. As soon as you turn on Dynamesh, you will lose the majority of detail on your mesh. Decimation will turn your mesh into varied size triangles which will put a quick stop to polypainting. Your best bet is to use Retopolgy (using a ZSphere) to create a low poly skin that you can later subdivide so you can Project the details from you high poly mesh onto it.

That’s brilliant! Thank you!

You could try dynamesh/remesh if you’re satisfied with the topology it would spit out on the lower resolutions. It might speed things up a bit to duplicate the tool first so that the duplicate subtool gets a new resolution while the original remains with all it’s detail.

Decimation Master would create a mess of a result (wireframe wise; the surface should still look largely identical). It would be more useful if you wished to create a lighter version of the sculpt to take into an external application for retopology there. Otherwise it’s not something I’d use to create a base mesh, or a final mesh for games/animation.
