Retop Guidlines?

I am working on doing a retop on a model, but seem to struggle with where to build. The model is human. The funny part is I have built humans in maya and now in Z, but seem to have trouble laying my new topology out on the z mesh.

Any tips or guidlines on how to lay this out? I am wanting to retop so the mesh can be animated.

Many people like to polypaint the original model with lines to lay out the edge loops. They do this before starting the retopology process, and then just draw the topology lines over the polypaint lines. From there it’s pretty much just connecting the dots.
