repetetive patterns

Well, i have this problem that i’m not sure how to approach.

For example, lets say i’d like to make this greek column:

How would i go uppon doing things like that ornament that goes all around the column (cylinder)? What would be the best wa to make complex ornaments, that goes into cylindrical shape like this?

Tnx!

Hey.

I have an idea as to how to approach this, but I think I’ll stick around longer to grab some knowledge myself.
I would probably try using radial symmetry for this.
Use a primitive (like a cube or cylinder), adjust it a little using initialize and make it a polymesh.
Then go to transform, activate radial symmetry, ramp up the radial count and paint away. You should be able to do the whole pattern perfectly symmetrical - but you only have to sculpt it a single time.

Give it a try and see how it works for you.
Let me know if you run into any problems and I’ll try to help you out “until help arrives”. (i.e. some zbrush pro kind enough to share his/her wisdom and enlighten us…)

Yes, MaxLenneper, you are right. Radial symmetry would be the way to go. For the vertical flutes you would use radial symmetry with the Standard brush and Zsub. Starting your stroke then using Shift key to constrain it to a straight line. Same thing would apply to the rounded horizontal parts only using Zadd for outside round and Zsub for inside round. For the ornamental part, you could use radial symmetry with an alpha and DragRect stroke or you could sculpt it in. I did the following in about 5 minutes using radial symmetry.

Ok tnx a lot, both of you!

I will try to play with this tomorrow, but sounds like a good idea!

Zocky,

If you have any questions about anything, then post them in the Other Questions and Troubleshooting Forum.

This Tutorials Forum is reserved for people who want to post a finished tutorial.

If you want to upload any of your artwork or Zbrush sculpts, they would go in the Main Forum.

Thanks!
