Repeating a pattern following a torus

I would like to know how I can make a lace trim. I have a texture from cgtexture which I altered a bit

[FabricLaceTrims0017_M.jpg](javascript:zb_insimg(‘155199’,‘FabricLaceTrims0017_M.jpg’,1,0))

I’d like to be able to get it to repeat around a extracted torus. Than I’d like to get rid of the hole areas so that it is actually a lace geometry. Is this possible? And if so how is it done?

I’m curious, why do you want the lace to be geometry? Why not use an alpha? Will the camera really be that close to it?

If I had to do it as geometry, I’d do it in a 3D app. I’d draw the lace pattern using 2d lines, then extrude.

Its going to be baked down into a texture with alphas for a game character.

How would I get a simplified version of this to wrap around the torus?
