Rendering test w/ yellow head

I have been very interested in rendering techniques since I saw Maddam’s posts here with his amazing lighting. I have been trying to copy these techniques since but it is difficult. I am just posting this for some feedback. This is a quick model I whipped up with a bit of wrinkles for displacement in 3dsmax with Mental Ray. I am using some DOF (maybe too much) and GI with Final Gather and a MR area light. I am still fairly clueless about shaders. Whenever I start applying one to my character he either disappears or gets flat. This is just a standard material.
