rendering question

I created a character with sculpted handwraps and was wondering if there was some way to render this character with SSS fast skin shader and keep those wraps looking right. Does it all deal with just painting separate maps or will I have to somehow separate the wraps and use a different shader on them?

Are you talking about the SSS Fast Skin Shader in Max (or similar)?

If so, and your sculpt is all one mesh and you dont want to separate the wrappings from the body, just paint your texture maps for the whole mesh and then paint a specularity map (higher values on the skin than the wrappings). If you do the spec map properly, then you can make the skin look like real skin and the wrappings like wrappings without the need for different shaders. This would also make animating the character less of a task. Thats how I would do it anyway.

If the answer is no, disregard my ramblings , but perhaps you could be a bit more specific?

Cheers.

I actually did end up doing that (I’m using the SSS for maya btw) and it looked decent, but I also discovered how to create layered shaders using a transparency map, so I’m also going to try that next. I definitely appreciate you sharing that info with me though! Thank you!

No worries Corweee,

I thought you must have been talking about Max or Maya…mental ray shader, right?

Anyway you sound like you are working out how to get a really nice sss effect in Maya, and the model looks like it would look cool when animated so don’t hesitate to share your progress!

Yup! and thanks I’m definitely trying to give it that cartoony pixar-esque look, and I will definitely keep sharing my progress throughout the texturing and animating process, I’m planning on completing a little short with this character in a couple weeks time. Thanks again!
