Render Best hanging / crashing zbrush

Render->Best has been hanging on a lot of my models. It seems to just hang or cause issues. But this is strange behavior because I just did a really quick render of a model a bit ago and then I did a little bit of TPose Master and now it is having trouble.

Is this because there is just too many high res models visible? What can I do to get around this? What factors are involved in hanging up Render-Best?

Sometimes windows will make a “ding” sound and sometimes it will just sit there and spin the waiting icon over and over until I crash the program out.

Thanks

Dense meshes may cause Best render to take a while but shadow settings and document size are the most likely cause. If you aren’t using BPR then you can turn off Edit mode, which may speed things up a bit. Also, the waiting icon may show but doesn’t mean that ZBrush has stopped.

I’ve just encountered this same problem with 4r6 on two separate Macs (OSX 10.7.5 and 10.8.4, both with 16Gb RAM). Sometimes the Best Render works once, but most of the time it just hangs. The interface is mostly unresponsive, ESC does nothing, but the tool tips still work and I can quit ZBrush without force-quitting. Activity Monitor shows ZBrush using about 5% of the processor, which tells me it’s not really doing anything and certainly isn’t rendering. The situation seems to be aggravated if I do anything with LightCap before trying to render. BPR works consistently and doesn’t hang, although it fails to show the rendered image if the document size is large. It does export the image correctly. I’d really like to find out how to make Best Render work. Any suggestions on how to diagnose the problem would be welcome.
