Render Artifact with Displacement Maps in Maya 2009

So I’ve been getting this problem rendering displacements in Maya 2009. The maps seem to be working properly, but for some reason at the fingertips of the model, there is a bulging artifact. I’ve tried changing topology, changing UVs, etc. The only solution that has been able to do anything really- is painting out the artifacting regions in ZBrush back to a 50% gray.

There has to be something have I’ve been overlooking because this problem can’t be something that is considered acceptable in a production pipeline. Please, any help would be much appreciated.
