Refraction weirdness

Just playing around with some tutorials and I’ve found that if I add ANY amount of refraction to a low-RGB object, it immediately becomes an opaque render. In other words, a sphere added with low RGB will turn sort of “alpha transparent”, but when refraction is added, spheres draw like a plain sphere again, with zero transparency no matter the RGB settings. This is the case with any refraction added, from 1 to whatever.

I’ve even tried going back to some of the earlier tricks around refraction–separate layer for the transparent object, “Flatten” off in the render panel, but no luck.

Is there some setting I’m missing, a video card issue? This holds even with “Best” render turned on. Using 3.5 R3 on Win 7.

Thanks in advance for any tips on what is probably a stupid question…
