Reference Image for 2D Illustration?

How do I have a rough sketch on one layer and paint RGB only on another layer in Flat Render shading mode?

There is an abundance of information here about using reference image planes for 3D modelling, but none of this helps me with my specific problem. Any ideas, please let me know.

Thank you,

Rory

There is a way to do it. A little tricky, but it works.

  1. Select the Flat Color material and the texture of your reference sketch. Make sure Mrgb is active, then press Texture>Crop and Fill.
  2. Press Layer>Create
  3. Select the Basic Material and turn off the texture. Press Ctrl+F to fill this new layer with that material.
  4. Set Layer>Displace Z to -100
  5. In the Material palette, open the Modifiers and set the Transparency slider to 100.
  6. Turn off Render>Flatten. This allows the transparency modifier to kick in, and the new layer will become invisible.
  7. Now select the BasicMaterial2 and set Diffuse to 100. Also adjust the DiffuseCurve so that it’s all white. (Drag the middle point of the curve off the box and then back on again to make it a hard point rather thana smooth one. Then move it to the upper left corner of the box.)

  8. Keep Draw>Mrgb active, turn off Zadd, and start painting.
What all of this does is create an invisible drawing layer in front of your reference layer. Then you paint on that layer with a modified version of the same material. Because the material properties are so similar, you don’t get edge artifacts. The reason the Diffuse settings were changed was so that this material renders out with the pure color.

Thank you so much, Aurick. Works a treat!

Cheers,

Rory
