Rectangle Alpha vs Square Alpha

I was wondering if some one out there had an answer to this question.

Why an Alpha that is a rectangle gets drawn out as a square?

In turn it always ends up being distorted. I know it is possible to change the draw size. But when using a DragRect brush on an object the width and height options are grayed out.

Is there a way to change this or am I SOL?

  • Draw your doodle plane and subdivide as normal.

  • Pick alpha 53

  • Alpha pallet>Make Stencil

That will drop a stencil of the alpha over the canvas using the native proportions of the alpha. Once you convert your doodle plane into a polymesh, you can then sculpt using the stencil.

Thanks, dustinbrown

creating a Stencil seems like a workaround, I wish there was just a better way to change the proportions of the alpha. right now I have been exporting my rectangle alphas and making them into squares in photoshop…

Keep in mind that you’re applying the alpha to a Plane3D. The Plane3D is by default a square. So ANYTHING you apply to it – alpha or texture – will be stretched.

To compensate, simply check out the dimensions of the alpha and divide the short dimension by the long dimension. This will give you a percentage, which you should multiply by 100. Now in the Tool>Initialize menu set the H or V (whichever is the short dimension) to be equal to what you just calculated. Now when you draw the plane it will match the alpha so that it’s not stretched.
