So besides painted maps how do you get such an painterly look to the renders. Is the trick in the lighting? Did you use AO or GI for these renders because I see no hard shadows?

paint guy: its a very simple light setup in max, i didn’t want it to destroy too much of the shading we painted in
one weak skylight without lighttracer beeing active just to brighten up the overall scene, one omni light with soft area shadows coming from the fron/top/right of the image, and two pretty strong omnis in the back to build the rimlighting also with area shadows but they exclude the groundplane, didn’t want any shadows to go to the camera
