Random Crashing issue with 3.5r2

Unfortunately, I dont get an error box or anything. The program simply stops responding. This has happened so far by extracting a subtool or painting on a mask.

I am just wondering if i have everything setup right or not. This is a fresh install. I am sorry i dont have anymore info then this. It is very weird. 3.1 did this as well but not as often.

If i can catch a screen grab of anything i will post it asap.

Specs:

Windows Vista Home 64 bit
Intel Quad 9400 2.8ghz
8 gigs ddr2 pc 8500
Ati radeon 3870x2 & 3870
asus rampage mobo
western digital 500 gig hard drives 2 total
western digital raptor 150 gig
ht omega claro + sound
Tri-monitor setup 1 hansG 28inch 2 samsung 24inch

I just wanted to add that my page file is about 12 gigs in size and I am running the most updated windows vista 64 bit edition to-date.

Also, does Zbrush 3.5 run by itself or does it call to files from 3.1?

If it uses files from 3.1 then i may need to reinstall it.

Random crashes are very difficult to resolve. In order for us to be able to identify an issue and correct it we need to be able to identify steps that consistently result in the crash. If you can spot a specific pattern and provide us with steps to duplicate it, we can certainly go from there.

Regarding setup, what are your settings in the Preferences>Mem menu? Also, have you installed any custom content in the ZStartup menu? (Specifically, any plugins from 3.1?)

Version 3.5 does not use anything from 3.1. It’s a complete, stand-alone version.

The Mem settings are maxed out which may be causing the issues…however, i boosted them up because I have 8 gigs of virtual mem and then 12 gigs for paging. I boosted the memory higher too because it wasnt handling things very well with high polys around 3-4 mil. It has been able to go up to 20+ mil in 3.1 just for testing. What ram settings should i have it set to you?

I have heard that there is a optimize zbrush thread somewhere but that was for 3.1. Zbrush is also full screened to one monitor which has a rez of 1920x1600 and it is a 28 inch screen. Could it have something to do with the rez?

Also there are 2 other monitors with the same rez but 24inch. The reason i bring this up is because of other apps such as maya which has a native rez that works well with the app and doesnt do well with multi screens (at least v8.5 and lower that is). I found this info just looking around the internet and found that it worked for me if i lowered the rez on the monitor. But thats defeats the purpose on why i got a bigger monitor!

Thanks for the prior response…I will take note to see if i can pin point steps i have taken.

ZBrush doesn’t use your system’s virtual memory/page files. ZBrush writes its own virtual memory file, in the ZBrush folder itself.

Compact Mem should be set about 1 GB lower than your system’s RAM.

The undo settings should be left at 4.

Make sure that the drive where ZBrush is installed has a good chunk of free space. Also make sure that it’s kept defragmented.

Ok thanks! I will try those settings and make sure there is plenty of space. I may have to move the program to another hard drive.
