Ralph Sutter - Sharkey

Hey everyone!

It really has been a while since I last posted anything on here!
So much great work popped up in the mean time!

I just wanted to share a quick w.i.p. with you guys:

Our teacher (from 3D VFX class) wanted us to create an ocean scene (where we used particle emitters for the schools of fish etc.). I figured, what would an ocean scene be without a shark?

He is definitely meant to be cartoony, as is the rest of the scene. The animation is rendering as I type this and should be done later on today. We pretty much had two days to model, rig, create particles, light and animate everything.

Will see if I can post some more recent pics in-between rendering times. If not, I will definitely post the animation soon!

Let me know what you think

Pretty cool. The shark has a lot of personality. I dig the overall proportions and design. He looks maybe a little bit lumpy, but it does give him an impression of being older as well, which I think is part of his character ( I’m guessing, based on the wrinkles, scars, etc.) Maybe trying to better integrate the eye into the body would be worth considering. Perhaps even giving him a bit of a “brow” to enhance his expression/character/mood. Even though it’s cartoony, it still looks a little too just stuck on there.

As for the environment, definitely get some underwater reference. Give it a lot more atmosphere/depth/haze. There’s a lot of particulate and less light under water, so being able to see so far into the distance is really unrealistic, cartoony or otherwise. Maybe pull a ZDepth pass out of ZBrush or whatever you’re rendering in to use as a mask, to fade out and blur/darken the background/depth.

Also maybe tone down and spread out the light rays. They’re too intense and unbalanced.

Maybe taking a more subtle approach to your details and design elements will help them look better, be more believable, and integrate into the scene a little more cohesively.

By the way, props for getting this all together in just 2 days.

That’s my take on it, for what it’s worth. Keep it up!

Thank you very much for the feedback! I will definitely implement the changes to the shark as soon as the assignment is done rendering.

I really want to make this piece as good as possible (whereas right now I am just rendering it and handing it in for homework reasons).

The environment shot was still in a very rough shape and has changed a lot since then (it was rendered in MAX btw). The reason I haven’t posted a more current shot of the environment is because my PC is still rendering the animation out.

I will post some more shots and the animated segment as soon it is done rendering! Again, thank you very much for taking the time to crit
