R2 Retopo Problem [Answered]

Hey there,

I apologize if this has been asked but I wasn’t able to find it. In previous versions of Zbrush, when I have had a topology line that ended up beneath the surface of the model, I could turn ghost on and move it back to the surface of the object instead of tumbling around the canvas. This doesn’t seem to work in R2. Is there something else I need to do now?

For now, I’m using Joseph Drust’s method for retopo: http://www.pixologic.com/docs/index.php/Joseph_Drust#Using_Appended_ZSpheres_to_Retopologize

It would still be nice to know how to fix this for future reference. Thanks!

I’m not sure what’s not working for you. Is it that you can’t see the vertex or that you can’t move it?

I can see them, I just can’t move them or even delete them for that matter.

Check that they are not masked by pressing Tool>Masking>Clear.

Masks are cleared, still can’t move points.

I attached an image in case that helps at all. I turned ghost off so you can see the lines a bit more clearly.rocktopo01.JPG

Thanks for the image, though I can’t tell what the problem might be. Have you tried turning ‘Edit Topology’ off and on again? If you could post a simple example of the problem (a ZTL) then I may be able to see what’s going on.

Hey Marcus,

Thanks for getting back to me. I don’t know if this matters or not but the files I am having trouble with originated as dynameshes. The dynamesh was turned off before being bound to a zsphere for retopology.

Here is an example file where the same problem is happening. There is one point beneath the surface of the mesh that I can’t seem to move.

Thanks very much for your time.

Many thanks, that’s a great help. I don’t think that it is specific to Dynamesh meshes. This is what is happening:

  1. If you create new topology with Ghost transparency turned OFF, then the new points will snap to the surface. If you switch to Move mode and move points they will stay on the surface, and you can’t move them below. So long as you keep Ghost transparency turned off, all should be well.

  2. If you turn on Ghost transparency and move points below the surface, once you release the mouse button you may not be able to move them to the surface again.

Solution:

For a point below the surface, if the lines that connect to it are displayed gray then you won’t be able to move that point, if the lines are orange then you will be able to move it.

To get the lines to display orange, rotate the model. In general, the closer the line is to the screen plane the more likely it will be orange. Zooming out, so the model is quite small, also helps a lot.

As a last resort, you can draw a mask around the point you need to move (be careful that you don’t include any other points), invert the mask so that all points except that one are masked, then use the Tool>Deformation>Offset slider to move the point above the surface. Don’t forget to clear the mask from the other points before continuing.

HTH,

Hi Marcus,

Sorry for the delayed response, I got a bit sidetracked. Thank you very much for the advice it was most helpful! I didn’t think about zooming out.

Thanks again for your time.
