Quick question about retopology...

Hello there,

I am a graduating student who is used to Maya and other 3d packages…But for an independent study I thought I would try modeling something completely in Zbrush. I am head-over-heels in love with the program and so far it has been fun, but it has also left me with some questions.

I recently started this piece and modeled the figures out of Zspheres (unfortunately they are not symmetrical…lots of work ahead!)

I noticed that using the goZ button kills your polygroups. I take it that is from a lack of UV’s?

My question is when do you guys UV and retopologize? I am familiar with the re-topo tool in ZB and I was planning on either using the UV Master plug-in or Headus. I’m getting the feeling that even though I am just starting to rough out shapes, etc…maybe I should take the time to do this?

Any advice would be welcome! (plz bear in mind this is is very rough and early on…comments are welcome as well)

Cheers!

I just realized I may have posted this in the wrong forum…

my apologies. this is not a finished tutorial by any means.

If you’re using zSpheres or a very rough basemesh then there is no point in UVing until you’re done with sculpting at least the major forms, otherwise your UV’s will just get stretched. If you have a very resolved basemesh and only bring it into zBrush to do fine surface detail like pores or wrinkles then you might as well UV it before you bring it into zBrush. Your model seems like it can be UVed at this point.

As for retopo I have no idea as I have never done it myself. I’m guessing you can do it at any point after you have blocked in all the major forms as well seeing as deformations in the higher subdiv levels will effect the lowest ones too.

That is a really cool sculpt by the way. Is it Kronos eating his children?

Yep…it sure is.

I thought it would be an interesting study for Zbrush… Both young and old in the same demented sculpt. plus plenty of sub-tools.

The main problem is that the reference painting is very deceiving. His stance seems awkward because of the play of values in his legs. His back leg is lighter than his front…

Thanks for the advice! I appreciate it!
