Questions & Troubleshooting for ZBrush 4R5

I just installed zbrush 4r5 and it always seems to crash after a 20 minutes or so, system requirements are met I just don’t know if its a glitch

After installing the new update to R5, registered the license and played with it fine for a while. i rebooted, when I logged in and clicked on the it would not run and removed the .exe file! the .exe file was not in the folder!

I have to re-install again?? what the hell …this is infuriating!

I was running the latest version and updated using the updater…

There is no way what you’re describing could have been caused by ZBrush. It’s not possible for a program to just spontaneously delete itself.

If your system didn’t revert to a restore point for some reason, the only other likely possibilities are a virus or a hard drive that is becoming unstable.

Yes I know, but thanks anyway, turns out it was the Kaspersky anti-virus software problem. all good now after changing some settings.

i reinstalled zbrush 4r5 but it keeps crashing i currently have a windows 7 2009 with 4gb ram and a 64 bit operating system

You should submit a Support ticket.

I have one question that has no answer. I asked him then.
During the topology, or just what the parts do. Transparency grid is impeding.

The only way around that is Using Appended ZSpheres to Retopologize which doesn’t have that problem.

edit: The good thing about using the appended zsphere method (besides not seeing the cage through the mesh) is, that you can also retopologize accross multiple subtools.


Thanks for the reply. I know this article and many times viewed. The fact that I had looked through quickly and not poring. And it seemed to me, it just is not clarified. And I did not notice the fact that there were confused to say. Lol

For the topology, do the following.

  1. Add a sphere in [SubTool]
  2. Open [Topology] end just press [Edit Topology]
  3. it’s all

Do not select an object in the tab Rigging. !!!

Every time I try to use q-remesher, it flips my model upside down. Is anyone else having this issue/know how to fix it? I’ve searched forums, opened tickets, re-installed previous versions, etc and it’s driving me nuts.

Have you changed your Preferences>ImportExport settings from the defaults? It’s possible that could be the reason.

Thanks for the reply. No, all settings are default and it was created in zbrush, not imported…

I’ll open a ticket for these, but thought I’d post them here first. Especially the first one might save someone a lot of time (see the workaround I mention):

  • When using GoZ from ZBrush to Maya, exporting a mesh with a vertex count that is an exact multiple of 165 plus 1 causes the import to Maya to fail. When the vertex count is 165*n+1, ZBrush tries to setAttr on a single vertex using a range syntax (see below), which Maya doesn’t like.
    setAttr “.vt[1650:1650]”
    37.22137 6.81043 1.06252;
    Adding a vertex or deleting a vertex in ZBrush before exporting fixes the GoZ issue.

  • Assigning the scroll wheel like a hotkey doesn’t work on Mac. When I Ctrl-Alt-click on an element such as Draw Size, I get the “…assign custom hotkey…” message as expected. But then when I scroll the mouse wheel or use my Wacom tablet’s scroll strip, nothing happens.

  • Draw palette: Not sure if this is intentional, but negative values of Grid Elevation work the same way as positive values when the Snap feature is turned off.

  • Projection Master doesn’t seem to work at all on a Mac.

  • Double-clicking on a .zpr file (or .obj, etc.) in Finder on Mac brings up ZBrush as expected. However if the path to the file contains any spaces, then ZBrush displays some error and fails to load the file. The space causes problems whether it’s in the file name itself, or any of its parent folders.

  • Tool->Geometry->qRemesher->DetectCurve => “Sorry, this function requires the full version of the QRemesher plugin”. However in 4R5, QRemesher is not available as a separate plugin as far as I understand it.

  • Polypainting issue: Apply something like Tool->Surface->Noise->NoiseMaker->Marble on a model without a uv or texture map. Polypainting becomes impossible until you create a uv map, enable texture map, and disable texture map.

  • Dynamesh’s Project option doesn’t seem to work at all (I get very messy faces out of even a simple cube). I get much cleaner results if I duplicate the subtool first, re-dynamesh, and Project All myself.

  • UV Master -> WorkOnClone sometimes gives a scripting error. (I can’t replicate this right now, so I don’t remember what the exact error message is).

  • The background of the tooltip/help windows that comes up when I hold the Cmd key down over a menu item is too transparent. If the canvas/model has light colours, it is impossible to read the tooltip text.

Minor issues aside, thanks for building such an amazing product. ZBrush is one of the most fun tools I’ve ever used.

Hi all,

As indicated, in the title of this post, EVERYTIME I try to create an insert mesh brush I get an error message that says “Unable to Open File”. Then Zbrush closes (crashes).

I started trying to make a tri-part insert mesh brush of something I needed but after experimenting to try and figure out what I was doing wrong I ended up finaly try to make an Insert mesh brush out of a simple one item cylinder or cube (or any of the primitives) after making them into a polymesh.

I get the same message and same results (the Cannot open File and Zbrush crashing) EVERYTIME I hit the “Create InsertMesh” button no matter what subtool I use.

Any advice?

I’m receiving this exact same error. I’ve downloaded the latest plugin from the downloads page and was able to at least get the views working, but I can’t save the views to a file.

I have the problem with saving, it is appearing with quick save too after 10 or more minutes of work… That error is ruin all the work everytime. :frowning:
I tried to install into separate folder from Pixologic, the program is running with administrator rights and the worst thing I can’t open ztools exported from 5 version in 4 version. Hope for any help, thanks.
The strange thing in google I can find such topic only with cracked versions happened.
