Questions for the ZBrush-Experts

Hello dear ZBrush-Community.
Me, I am a complete “newb” to the whole topic of 3d-modeling or even “sculpting” as it is done with ZBrush. So my question is:

Should I rather learn the use of “traditional” 3d-modeling software aka 3dsmax or is ZBrush a true alternative if the goal of the whole process is to be able to create 3d models for homebrew DirectX 3D Games?

Since you’re going for games, I’ll say one isn’t an alternative to the other. Some things you can do in a 3D app that you cannot do in ZBrush, and vice versa. They compliment each other well. Learn both.

That sounds reasonable. Thank you very much for your swift reply.

I only have a bit theoretical knowledge about these topics and the programs I heard of the most are Softimage (aka XSI), 3dsmax and ZBrush.

What are the best steps to learn how to create models & textures and animate them from scratch?

I want to be able to at least create low-quality models soon, so I can use them in prototype-games.

Do you have any ideas? =)

There are schools you can go to; and there are pros and cons to going that rout. If you have the time and the tenacity, then for a couple hundred dollars you can kick your education off well with some books and DVDs. Look up book reviews on Amazon. DVDs can be had from Gnomon Workshop, Digital Tutors, and KURV. Good luck.

I won’t visit a school for that purpose. I want to learn this solely by reading and through tutorials. There are already several Gnomon DVDs under my possession but many go deeper than the basics.

When I wanted to learn the basics of C++ I’ve read C++ Primer. What should I read to learn the basics of 3dsmax/ZBrush?
