Questions and Troubleshooting for ZAppLink

try running Zbrush as administrator

When i hit ctrl+shift+s (or hit the ZAppLink button) it sends me to photoshop with no problems, but it never opens a document to edit. i recently formatted my computer and am thinking i may have forgot something. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Which OS are you running? If it’s Vista, try right-clicking on the ZBrush3.exe and choosing “Run as Administrator”. Do the same for Photoshop.

when i posted i didnt know someone had just asked that question. It worked running both photoshop and zbrush as administrator… now its disabled… vista is good at slowing down my workflow now its back to the glowing seam problem from way back…

Thanks For The Help!

Hey guys! I got quite an interesting and unique issue.
Got xp 64 bit running on a quad core 8 gig ram
Running Zbrush 3.1 with Zapplink V3

For some strange reason after running a few controlled tests I found that Zapplink refuses to load a previously saved view depending on the canvas size.

Please consider that I am using large canvas sizes.
If the width of the canvas is 2900 or less it loads the view with no hassle (my camera pops into place ).
If the width is one pixel greater (2901 - 8000) it does not load at all (my character stays exactly where I drew him on the canvas).
Any value for the height seems to work fine.
I create a new document thereafter I resize it and draw my tool,
load my views and hit either cust1,cust2. I’ve tried other orthographics views (front, side, back, etc) as well.

Can someone else please test this, cos I think I’m going nuts.
Unfortunately I can’t find any other solution as rendering displacement in an external package(maya, max) is not an option for me right now.

Aurick,anyone out there, please help!!!:o

ZappLink never really appealed to me but recently I’ve been wanting to try it out in my workflow. I get the same “error encountered while attempting to launch external editor” message. I’ve tried most of the above mentioned solutions but still same problem.

Specs:

  • Windows XP 64 pro (with latest updates), dual core, 8 gig memory
  • Zbrush 3.5r3, Photoshop CS4 ( my target app)

It seems like an awful lot of headache to make this work?

Ok checking it put looks like zaplink has issues with canvas sizes. i tested with canvas 1600x1200 and it doesnt work to pass to photoshop but if i do smaller i works without trouble.

…because there is still the “coming-soon” on the pixologic webspace:

Is there a existing ZAppLink-Version for 3.2 on Macintosh?

Maybe a previous one which runs, too?

I could need it urgently, because its so annoying to paint details on a texture in PS.

Thanks for a reply,

Stephan

You can export two screen image and paint them in layers and bring back into projection master the old fashion way.

1st image with flat material because you need it to paste back into projection master without the shading and press pick.

2nd image is with basic material (shaded) so that you can use it as a guide to paint your texture in external application, usually a multiply layer but turn off this layer to re-export it back, just make sure you don’t rotate or move the model in Zbrush so you can pick and drop with the same angle as many times as you need.

I used to do that before there are Zapplink.

I´ll try it out.

Good night (Yes, I´m going to go to bed now)

Hai for al the zapplink users on a mac I had a problem setting a 2D app. it just crashed evry time. then I discovered that it was a path problem. Go to zapplink in zbrush when you set your 2D app choose the right path meaning start at the top level . Like in MS DOS you start from the top level C or D in mac you start from the top root level COMPUTER " (you need to activate side bar computer in Finder pref.). So you scroll from your computer to your HD - tothe location where your 2D app is. Now zapplink has an exact path an other thing I did was rename the map from zbrush to zbrush2 aswell as the Zbrush app. name. best Jo

What the map you mean?

The map where your ZB app is in rename it to Zbrush2
someone mention it in a thread.

But actually, I dont think this makes a difference.

Best Jo

For those who dont get it

your top root in a mac computer running leopard is named “computer (name)”
if you go to Finder-preference-side bar,… and enable computer, the top level “computer” appears in the sidebar and
is named as your “computer name”. (now you have an idea of the [path and root names)

Go to zapplink in zbrush when you " SET " your 2D app. choose the right path.
meaning “START” at the top level which is “computer” named as your “computer name”

So now you scroll in zapplink starting from your computer to your “HD” -
to the location where your target 2D app is ( i.e. photoshop).

Now zapplink has an exact path.

An other thing I did was rename the map from zbrush to zbrush2 and I also
renamed the Zbrush app. into Zbrush2 but I dont think this was necessary.

THE SOLUTION IS EXTREAMELY SIMPLE!

The path to 2d app should NOT contain a cirillic symbols. Only latin!
