Aurick has there been any resoultions for the MAC the ZAppplink plugin is still not working for some of us mac users. Is ther anyway to narrow down what is happening. It works on some macs and not on others. which leads me to believe it could be a Mac user end problem or the script needs to be opened up and not to stringent on file paths since different users set up their macs user structures.
I’m running OS 10.4.2 have the applink in the correct folder with data etc like all other zbrush plugs… its just now instead of “error encountered trying to connect” (rev1). And there being no connection between ZB and PS.
Now after i choose my app location (thanks for adding) (rev2) its says App linking… but then crashes ZB…
Anyways, a little patience never hurt anyone, as im sure your working on Rev3 - my suggestion would be to add an Applink options panel , or just a single button to the existing interface which lets you change the app and therefore file path whenever you feel it nessesary. If i want to paint with photo’s i may want PS’s toolset, if i want to make it look like its a toy, or stylized I may want Painters toolset. I just think it would be nice to have a choice on more than just the inital launch of the script. - Ken
That’s cool
I think they should open source the plugin code so some mac coders can take a look at it. The beta team they are using if they are using one is too small. At some point you have to realize the mac development is not working out well. It is holding up all the realeases. I have no problems on my PC with Zbrush and the plugins. My advice would be to look at a better Mac development team. Sometimes you have to lose control to gain it.
“Error encountered while attempting to launch external editor.” I’ve followed every suggestion posted on this board.
creating new account - did not work - changing file associations - did not work
File Associations on my hard drive (even after I attempted to change them - This is probably an issue of the file creator - Mac issue.):
Adobe Photoshp Pictures - Icon for Preview
Adobe Photoshop Elements File - Icon for Adobe Photoshop Elements 2
Documents with .psd extension - Generic file Icon
I have at least 8000 .psd fieles on my HD - 4000 of them none Adobe Photoshop Elements Icons.
Path information for Applications:
Adobe PhotoshopElements2 - /Applications/Adobe Photoshop Elements 2/Photoshop Elements 2.0
Expression3 - /Applications/MyProgamme/Expression 3 ESD/Expression 3/E3 X
ZBrush2 - /Applications/ZBrush 2/ZBrush2
System specification:
ZBrush2 on iBook G3 - 900mhz - 640MB-RAM - OSX 10.2.8/ MacOS9.2 in Classic Environment - 8GB free disk space

I think you might be right on this. Having other users, especially those with more experience under their belt, tinker, debugging, ultimately improving the plugin code might make development faster. This would most likely force Pixologic to develop some type of system to sort through submitted updates. (Which might be a problem.) I’ve tried that suggestion on debugging ZAppLink, made by aurick, but had no luck since it’s stored in a DLL. So I have no clue what it’s attempting to do and how it’s trying to do it. I’m still a newbie at Zbrush, but I’ve beaten my had enough times against my computer with languages like AppleScript, JavaScript, ActionScript, etc, to be insane enough to want to route around and try to debug it. I’d love to know how ZAppLink is trying to open the PSD file in an imaging app.
Since ZAppLink is stored in a DLL (you can call this a wild assumption), and Pixologic may have bigger plans for this plugin as a feature, and maybe open-sourcing may not be ideal for them. Which is fine. I’m sure the Mac side of the development team are quite competent, but may need more people to help squash bugs or hire folks with more experience with the ins and outs of Mac OS X. I can only imagine how much of a pain in the ass to create a plugin, have functioning properly on two different platform, and releasing it in a timely manner.
I remember stumbling across a threat here about weather or not Zbrush should be released for Linux. This would be ideal for studios that made the jump to an all Linux pipeline, but would be easier said than done with all of the different flavors of Linux out there. (I don’t know if Hollywood has settled on a specific variant of Linux, like Redhat, Debian, etc.)
Anyways, thanks once again to the folks at Pixologic, and keep krackin’ away!
me too still having the same error msg with Rev2. OSX 10.28
Yep, same here on Mac OS X 10.4.2 (dual G5 2.5 GHz, 4.5 Gb RAM, zBrush 2.03):
Rev 1 gives “Error encountered while attempting to launch external editor.”
Rev 2 crashes zBrush.
I tried to get it to work in OSX 10.3.6 and still the same error message.
any coders, here ? Yep same mistake, I have try many things… but its just a little plug’in… please its like hell, you see an apple that you cannot eat, because she’s too high in the tree, but she’s so delicious… we are near the goal for the Zapplink… I hope… zut, look’s so cool !!!
I’m using 10.4.2 and have had no trouble with photoshop. What apps are you guys trying to use?
Hello Cassandra,
I have done this: replace the original file of PSCS, in another root folder, nothing happen. I make a new istall of zbrush, and nothing.
I request something can you post your hardisc in JPG, to see the structure of your files , where they are, and the whole structure of your appz folder, and co… that wil help !
With Photoshop that crash again , with painter also, with preview also…

Hi I am running ZBrush2 on my Mac G4 867Mhz with 1.5 Gig Ram
Os is X 10.3.9. There’s 14.5Gb free on the hard drive where Zbrush is located.
I’m also getting the “Error encountered while attempting to launch external editor.” in both rev 1 and rev 2 versions of ZappLink. I’ve tried the various solutions presented here, but nothing has helped.
Has anyone running System 10.3.x gotten ZappLink to work? It seems to me the people reporting success have been running 10.4.x?
-mark
I’m confident that Rev3 is in the works, i think the vast majority of mac users are unable to use Zapplink in its current iteration.
I have just got my Imac back after a major failure resulting in a new Logic board and hdd.
Before that all happened, this plugin absolutely refused to work no matter what I tried and believe me I tried all that was suggested. That was with OS 10.3.9 and my original hdd and logic board.
Anyways I have just received my new serial number from Matthew for my re-installation of Z2 on my new system install which is now OS 10.4.2 Tiger and ZappLink works like a dream with no problems encountered so far.
Not sure what that tells the guys at Pix but at least there is some hope for the guys still suffering problems.
Hope this problem gets sorted
Bill
I may try a reinstall as well. It may be something on my system that is causing it not to work.
Just wondering "if? a Rev 3 for OSX is in the works of Zapplink?
Wondering if there should be a poll taken to see what percentage of OSX users are able to get Zapplink to work on their systems. I assumed that the vast majority of mac users where having issues, maybe im wrong.
Just wondering if im waiting in vane, and should be playing with my admin system settings, or other obscure things that have worked for some ppl. I’ve tried several “fixs” unsuccessfully.
PS. works fine for me at work on Win Xp.
Mine is still not working and crashes ZB at the same place every time - right where the dialogue 'App Linking…" appears.
Ho hum…don’t suppose there’s any news on this problem?
Thanks
Sav
