Questions About Zbrush

Hello everyone, I’m an aspiring 3d modeler for the film industry who has been teaching himself maya modeling for the last month, but I’ve been very curious about zbrush/sculpting for a few reasons. It seems a lot faster to finish models, and more precision for adding attention to detail. So my 2 questions are…

What are the benefits of modeling in zbrush compared to maya/max and vice versa?

In your honest opinion, do you find it takes more talent or artistic ability to sculpt than say poly modeling in maya which would be more technical?

zbrush is an artists tool…so I would like to say it takes more time to master…not talent. Any traditional poly modeler is very technical, so it just has a greater learning curve (in my opinion).

Think about it like this. If you give a traditional sculptor Zbrush, they pick it up in a couple of hours, not the technical stuff, but the main points are there. If you give that same sculptor MAYA, it takes them a couple of weeks/months to get to the same level of detail/art/whatever you want to call it.

I wouldn’t say Zbrush is faster…I’d just say, it’s more intuitive, so we just seam to pick it up faster. A “finished” model still takes time, and they turn out to be about the same if you take a Zbrush guy, and a Traditional 3D guy…they’ll give you the same result in about the same time. The real question comes from which can prototype faster, and Zbrush will win hands down every time.

eh, my 2 cents.
