Question

Would it be illegal or something if someone downloaded a poser model in dfx format and then customized it in Zbrush? I was wondering this because i havent used Poser (except for demo) and i wanted to mess around with a poser model in Zbrush. I dont have Poser and i just wanted to know if that would be reproduction of the software and stuff like that. Thanks.
It really doesnt matter if i can or cant, i just wanted to see what it was like.

No it wouldn’t if the DXF model was offered as a free download.

Have at it!

cool! the model i was gonna download was the generic poser model that comes with the demo. It is preposed with the arms straight out. Im gonna see what its like now. Thanks Kathy.

Well as a law graduate, i can say that is no illegal as long as you do not sell your image.Thre a lot of people that use poser models as a start of building a more complex model. So do not worry you do the right and the clever thing.

I downlaoded the dfx file and messed around but i like to just make my own in Zbrush. I would never import the figure, modify it, export it and try to sell the model for money. Thanks for posting, Khlon.

Hi LWTB,

Files that are included with a commercial demo are not ‘free’ and they are protected by the license agreement for that particular application. You would need to read the license agreement of the application to determine whether you are allowed to use such models with/without purchasing the program.

My guess (without reading the above mentioned license agreement) is that you are not allowed to use the files that are supplied with the demo version without actually first purchasing the program itself, and then, you may only use these files in accordance with the license agreement.

Hope this helps,

ZuZu

I didnt use the model with the demo. I downloaded a poser model for free from the web. I dont really like it that much so im sticking to trying to create full body models entirely in Zbrush. Thanks ZuZu

can you (import/export) a dfx format in demo?
usley if you downloaded a poser model for free or any thing that says FREE mean you can do any thing you want…
take note if you see a copy right symbol i wouldn’t try to modify it,

nope not in poser (well i dont think you can)

There are images , model etc. which are called royality free. This means that yes you can do what you want with them modify or sell them. You will not be liable under Copyright law. However even thought for all the other cases you will be liable, you do no need to worry it is highly unlikely someone will sue a not so famous artist. Especially in the case you might modify its geometry the it can be almost impossible that their creator might recognize them. In practical terms you must do something extrodinary foolish in order to be caught by the ‘web of law’.
