Question : Sculpting a mesh on a separated mesh !

hi all,

Please i have a question :

how can we add a mesh that i can sculpt on other mesh in zbrush ?

i mean for exemple i have a chocolat ball, i want to sculpt some lines of cream on it, but i want that cream to be a seperated mesh ON the chocolat mesh( align the surface ) so i can add different material in other rendering software easily…

exemple :

is it possible in Zbrush ? ( i don’t talk about other softwares )

Thanks !

Append a ZSphere and you can draw them directly on the surface of another subtool. Then you can ‘Make Adaptive Skin’

Note: It’s not enough to just select the ZSphere in the Subtool menu and start drawing. You have to select the ZSphere in the Subtool menu then activate it on the canvas by holding down Ctrl and clicking on it. See image below.

thanks i was thinking about zspheres because i didn’t use it for a long time and yeah that’s the only way i think to achieve this in zbrush without complications. Thanks again for the pic !

i think teher’s another way but not that clean as the zsphere : Extract mode using mask !

it works i did a fast try , but the problem is when i Zadd on it, the extracted mesh is going up the surface leaving space down… i must move it a lot to adjust it

I am quite new to zBrush but maybe I have an idea.
Your example could be solved with curve tube.

Draw a curve on your mesh. Take care that “Group” in Dynamesh menu is selected.
“Snap” in curves menu take care that you draw on the surface.
Curve01.jpg

You can sculpt only the curve mesh because “automasking” is on.
Curve02.jpg
Once you press “add” in dynamesh menu, both parts will still be separate. Meshview make this visible.
Curve03.jpg
CTRL SHIFT LMB Click will hide one part
Curve04.jpg
“Split hidden” will make a new subtool which you can refine easily.

This should do much more than you need for your example.
I hope this helps.
Btw. The new movies http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?161537-ZBrush-4R2-ZClassroom-Movies-Updated-to-include-17-Movies will take care about curves, clip curves, drawing curves - a big help!

Good luck!

i did a try of your method and it’s very handy thanks a lot, but the only thing is when i draw the curve, the mesh is not really aligned exactly on the surface ( the curve mesh is inside the sphere not on it ) i have to move it from the curve points…

Chakib, please don’t include the images in the quotes. We don’t really need them duplicated. Thanks!

ok sorry i didn’t know !

Did you activate the “snap” function in “Stroke Palette” under “Curve Mode” ?
Try to deactivate, “Bend” & "Intensity.
Did you choose the final brush size, before drawing final curve?
Curve steps <0.25 ?

Try to redraw from a different view angle, this can change the result.

I have tried it with a Size 1 tube and it was working in 90% at first try the other 10% after changing view angle a bit.
It’s quite amazing.

Good luck - my knowledge is over at this point
