question regarding retopologizing and texturing

Hi,

I recently drew some retopologizing mesh over my tool and saved it out as tool again. As I loaded this back in again I could see my already created mesh showing up in orange as expected, but when I added points I couldn´t see the mesh for them, although pressing “a” shows me, that there´s some mesh built.

And second. I wanted to unwrap the dog-tool in 3ds-max, then bring it back into zbrush and texture it. Now, I am wondering which subdivision state I should take, because when I import the dog with 4subdivisions (about 1 mill. pixels I guess), I can´t hardly work in max, because it´s extremely slow. Okay, thanks for now…

Ha ha yeah i remember that one. i used to finish my retopo in one session because i didn’t know how to bring the edges back.

Well after you loaded the model just switch off edit Topology and switch it back on. And there you are - loads of beautiful orange lines

Concerning the Subdiv, well subdiv 1 is definitely the way to go.

Hope that helps.

thank you very much dsoellbuster, finally I can see my lines again  .

What would you recommend for doing the retopo, using zbrush or edit the model in 3ds max, maya or another 3d-app at hand? And is it possible to just retopologize one side of the model and then mirror the new topo over to the other side? So many questions left…  Thanks in advance

Well i would definitely do the retopo in ZBrush because they provide you with the best tools (well plus topogun) and as you just have to press “x” while doing retopo, you are mirroring.

Have fun ZBrushing

oh man, pressing “x”, the world could be so simple…

And for the dog-tool. Here´s how I would do it, please correct me if I am wrong…

  1. export subdiv-level 1 as obj. and import it into max
  2. unwrap it
  3. save it as obj
  4. import it back into zbrush
  5. apply shader to model?
  6. paint the texutre in photoshop?
  7. apply it to the model?

as you see, I am a bit unsure about the texturing process. It would be great if you could explain to me the correct workflow.

There you go, just found this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ambVg1WxFWU

Also, if you are tired of im/exporting all the time, just try out the new PUV’s, they actually work quite nicely. But it does depend on what you wanna do with your model.
