Question regarding Alien Helmet tutorial - Polygroups and materials

When I watched the ‘Alien Helmet’ Tutorial, about 04:40 into the tutorial
he starts his finishing process on the helmet. I’ve watched over and over and I really can’t make it out, but to me it looks like he’s not using subtools but merely ‘painting’ materials with selected colour onto the isolated poly groups. Now, I’ve tried to replicate this, however, without subtools, as soon as I switch to another material, the whole model gets affected.

So basically, how does he ‘poly paint the isolated poly groups with another material without affecting the rest of the model’, aka, how can he swap material without anything actually happening to the model itself.

If you can, it would really speed things up. And if you can’t, could anyone show me a link or explain how you would do what he does in the video!

Kind regards, Hiken

I just tried this out on a simple Polysphere. As long as you fill your model right at the beginning with a material, you can paint and change materials later on as mush as you like.

If you don’t do a “Fill Color” with “M” on you are right, the base material will change.

Hope that helps.
