QUESTION: How do you create Celtic knot style detail?

Hello!

I’ve been working to 3D model a 1:1 scale replica of an object from a videogame so I can 3D print it later.
It’s a very complex design and I want to do my absolute best at recreating the detail on this piece.

I’m trying to replicate those Celtic knot style details that cover the surface of the sphere but I can’t think of a way to make those very fine gaps that create the illusion of the lines going over and under each other.
Obviously I can’t just draw one line over the other because the strokes will overlap causing them to be an uneven height from the surface of the sphere.
I’m curious to know if there’s a simple or convenient way of doing this.

If I’m being totally honest, I don’t even know where to start :stuck_out_tongue:

I apologize if this is a dumb question, I’m kinda new to 3D modeling and I’ve never tried tackling a project of this difficulty.
Any help, tips or tricks to help accomplish this would be greatly appreciated!Capture13.PNGCapture11.PNGInkedCapture12_LI.jpg

For something like this, try the Layer brush with a Morph Target stored:

  1. Press Tool>Morph Target>Store MT.
  2. Select the Layer brush and draw part of the design.
  3. Before drawing more of the design, try changing the Z Intensity so the lines are higher or lower.Layer_brush.jpg
